Meet the Expert: Brian Wellins

Written by ProPharma Staff | November 16, 2023

Our "Meet the Expert" series introduces you to our team of experts around the world. This "behind the curtain" view will help you get to know who we are on a professional and personal level, and highlight how our colleagues work together on our higher purpose to improve patient health and safety throughout the complete product lifecycle.

Meet Brian Wellins, Senior Director, Pharmacovigilance Case Processing

What do you do at ProPharma? How does your role support improving the health and safety of patients?

I lead our adverse event (AE) case processing team in Pharmacovigilance. The team is vital in the proper reporting of safety information to clients and regulatory authorities. The team is responsible for AE intake and follow-up, serious adverse event (SAE) review, medical review, and safety lead functions.

What's your number one goal / focus right now?

I am excited to bring a continuous process improvement mindset to the team to help further accelerate the improvements they have already made. I look forward to helping the team adopt a lean six sigma framework to help us streamline our processes, gain efficiency, and offer consistent processes across the globe. I also enjoy empowering the team to find a better path forward and giving them the tools to consistently meet their goals.

What is one lesson you’ve learned in this industry that has most helped you?

I have gained a great appreciation of accountability in the tasks we perform. We are a critical component in the safety of new compounds or products on the market and I take that responsibility seriously. I preach accountability within my teams and think it lends itself well in this subset of our industry.

Tell us a little bit about yourself outside of work.

I live in Austin, Texas with my wife and we have three children (13, 11, and 5) that are the focus of my time away from the office. My family are huge baseball fans and try and catch Seattle Mariners games on the road whenever we can, with the goal to eventually see them play at every Major League Baseball ballpark.

What value does a client gain by working with ProPharma’s Case Processing experts?

As a Research Consulting Organization (RCO) we embrace our willingness to adapt our processes to match our client's specific needs vs trying to get them to adapt to how we process a case. We offer custom solutions that are right sized for the task at hand and don’t compromise on quality. I was pleasantly surprised to see the team’s approach to QC-ing cases and making sure we get it right on behalf of our clients.
